Dear Hugh,

I bought one around thanksgiveing, and started my fifth run 5 min. ago. It's been an excellent choice for me. I use propane turkey fryer as heat source, and jusr received an adopter for hooking up to a keg as a boiler. But this unit is faster, and time is a factor for me. Also, since I have to run mine outside, I found it extremely helpful to insulate the top half of the boiler, and the column. Much better results. I also, bought a digital thermometer, as its much easier to read, and has an alarm when temp is reached. very good workmanship. I think you would be pleased.

Hello john,

thanks for the info, are you going to be using the keg simply to gain boiler capacity?

I am going to the keg for several reasons, Yes,the first is so I can runa double batch, 50 liter, in one run- 1 heat up, 1 clean up, but also with my propane turkey fryer heater, it is larger at the bottom, has a sleeve that will capture the heat better, and would like to do some rum with molasses, and I understand there can be considerable foaming. Finished that run mentioned earlier. A 25 litre 20% sugar wash, about 2 quarts of heads and tails from before, and gravel as boiling chips. Ran it fast, for me,as expected rain. Results were: foreshots tossed at 68 deg. ,elevation,, 1 qt. heads, at 73; 1 Gal. hearts, at 73 deg. all above at 92% ABV. Then 1 qt. at 90%, ending at 76deg., then pint at 79% ending at 78 deg, then pint at 76% ending at 84 deg. Started to rain, and down to very slow drip, so shut down. I took this last, and as a test diluted 50/50 with water to try, as it had ablolutely no smell, and whola,, still no odor, and absolutely no bite, off taste, or a fter taste- the most neutral of allmy runs, and no carbon filtering as I had done the previous runs. Against all I have read, but there I happilly am. Later I will try the hearts of this run, but the only improvement could be a higher % of cheers. Also, after 14 days oerking, with a turbo 48 at 67 deg room temp, 6 hours outside in near freezing, and 2 days setteling, and 1 daywith Sparkoloid, thewash was almost water clear, and not as sweet smelling as all the ones before. Strange, but true, and I enjoy my still more every sip. BTW the temp. was 36 deg. F and 20 mph wind, so tough on any still, but insulated, I ran the whole mess in 5 hours, start of heating toshut off. Also, this was not in the keg, but the regular boiler. This baby if insulated, is not as temermental as I've read of some being- I think I'll give it a hug of thanks, and not worry about any snide comments from it. Cheers, all.
