if you divide the watts by the volts it will give you the amps. I have 1650w 110v element. So 1650/110=15 amps. So anything bigger than that would probably heat up your RSC too much

Glad I read this thread; I was going to get the 8 gallon version as well but will probably upgrade to a 15 gallon now. I like the idea of the insertion heaters, I did not realize BH would add NPT fittings to the pot. In looking around I saw another setup where they welded a clamp style flange to the pot (3') and then used a bung with a 2" NPT thread to install the heating element.

"just a little more info on this element thing.....it really doesn't matter what size element you choose to use, the RSC'er is only gonna give you so much juice. You can use a 110 volt or a 220 volt element, its the controller thats regulating the voltage and the element is just the final stage if you will. I use a 4500 watt 220 element but if all you can find is the 110 model, well that will do fine. I know I'm not getting the full 4500 watts because I'm only useing 110 30 amp circut.
I'm not saying anybody is wrong just wanted to make sure nobody is confused..."

If you were using a 5500w 220v what router speed controller would you use and where would you get it?

"Where do you look on the BH website to see the mods that they will do?

How do you get the NPT's added to the boiler?"

I just ordered mine yesterday and you add the mods when you are ordering online but you need to call them first to get the prices for what you want done. They can also tell you how to add it to your order. I am having them weld a 2" long weld tri-clamp ferrule to my boiler. I got a 2" tri-clamp fitting with a 1" ntp threaded hole in it from Hill Billy stills for my element to go into. I am just using 1 220v 5500w element on 240v power on the 15gal. kettle. I made my own power control box to control the heat. Its just another alternative...

Thats the direction I went too. I had 2" tri-clamp ferrules added for my heating elements (2) and one added for a drain to make it easier to handle hot backset. BTW, the cost for adding the additional ferrules was only a little more than adding just one. I'm using the element adapters too. The threads on those are cut with with a lathe and might need a little fine tuning. One of mine did and one didn't. All ordered part are in for the controller and a trip to Home Depot is all that left to get that finished. Getting close ...
