"I am very new to distilling and have a few questions about the yeast I bought... It says ""Do NOT airlock the fermenter."" Should I keep the lid sealed during the 8 days? The yeast came with anti foaming powder... So will that keep the bucket from blowing up on me?

If you put a sealed lid on the fermenter it will blow up. Maybe they just want you to put a cloth over the top . I can't imagine why they don't want a airlock unless the yeast needs some air circulation. I just googled that turbo yeast and didn't see anything about not using a airlock, it says to leave it ferment for 7-8 days, I don't see how you could get a good alcohol production with 02 in the fermenter. Wow 26 lbs of corn sugar, let us know how that comes out compared to one of your regular recipes.

try adding a rubber tube to the lid, then place the other end into a glass of water

Thanks! Here are the instructions... I see it says loosely cover the fermenter for 3 hours until you add the anti foam. I am guessing I leave it loosely covered until it is done fermenting?"

Is that not the same as an airlock? I would hate to void the instructions, but that almost seems best bet.

The stopper or lid with a tube coming out of it into a container with water in the bottom of it is about as good of a airlock as any other type you could buy. It's a really good airlock if you have trouble with your fermenter bubbling over. With the tube going into a milkjug with enough water in it to keep the end of the tube covered there is room for a lot of overflow.

I recently used turbo yeast wit an airlock and it was fine. The. Again I make my own airlocks which have a larger hole for air to escape.

Well they definitely don't want an airlock on it. I guess just a cover to keep the bugs out. Let us know how that works out. Maybe it has so much co2 coming out of it there isn't any room for o2 to get in :)"

Okay.. I had no idea how much more expensive corn sugar is.. The recipe calls for dextrose specifically.. but I cannot afford 23 lbs of it. If I substitute with grain sugar, will I need more/less? Should I then use airlock? Sorry for the greenhorn questions, but I would love the insight. Thanks again!

I think if I was you I'd start out with a more conventional recipe as a base and experiment more once you have all of the basic fundamentals down. Settle on a 5 gallon wash that uses 10lbs of cane sugar and what ever else you might want to use as a starting point. Keep track of each and it's results. You may find that a simple cheap recipe works just as well as some of the more expensive ones. I use an airlock on all of mine.

Once again I thank you much. If there were karma i would +3 haha, I think it is the fear of messing it up.. I have had a mash going (sugar, yeast, water) for about 5 days and only ordered the alchobase exterme because i had 20 left over in my paypal after getting the still.

I made my simple .mash tonight.. I had left the lids half sealed as I had no airlocks until my mail came today (with 2 gal still from ebay). My first mistake was cooling the condensor before the copper piping reached higher temp.. I am learning so much as I go.. It seems I only learn when I do something hands on. I have a ton of sugar and high active yeast to supply myself with expierements haha. I would deff like to try out this kit, tho it contains anit foam, active carbon, clear gel. and more.. all in one package.. tho I feel it will be more gimmick than it will be booze/dollar. I am glad I have it to fool with.. but will deff be creating most of my shine with tried and true simple methods.

My temp gauge is middle of the copper goose neck on my pot still. I had the cool water running thru.. and couldnt calculate the temp of the boil'd mash.. Dummp'd the first 4 oz's just in case. when I fially got a few inches on my jar.. call'd to a party. at the party I was not able to light my little shine.. but I was able to get what I call "ripped". Going to bed now,.. a few liters still to try and distill tommaorw.. than I am making jugs of mash with my new airlocks (came today with my still!) I am very excited to be able to provide one more thing for my fam. Thanks div4gold for the feedback.. it really helps a noob like me feel more comfterble.

i make my mash in a mr.beer fermenter barrell it already has a fermenter biult into the lid by way of 2 slots ,i just make the mash ,put it in the fementer and boom done.im going to upgrade my still to a mr.distiiler,doing my home work and it seems idiot proof mke your mash,let it fement ,ad to distiller ,1 hour later you got shine, anyone got one? let me know how they work ...shine on

Hello Widowmaker 66. Don't know if anyone has answered your question yet. I have a Easy still just like the Mr distiller. It is easy. it does take an hour plus to heat up. Then and hour plus or so of distilling. Then a while to cool of so you can start your next gallon. All in all it takes abut 2 1/2 hrs to run 1 gallon of wash. also I have not made what I consider a good neutral (vodka). I've made a very good corn whisky as well as a molasses and brown sugar rum. What I want though is vodka so I am ordering a reflux still very soon. Easy Stills are fun though. Good luck and be safe.
