reflux does not dilute the etoh it only runs thru the top of the column to cool it which sends the etoh back down therefore it's like distilling it more than once which gives a purer product, however not as much flavor will come thru. The airlock keeps contaminants like wild yeast out of your ferment and yes they are reusable. The diffuser plate is used to give a more uniform heat to the pot if you are using propane

So to cut your product you add water and distill again( to getting to desired alcohol content)?
So a reflux wood be good for something like volka but not honey moon shine?
How hard is it to make a good rum like Bombay?

yes you proof it with water but no need to distill again if you like the quality and taste. Rum is fairly easy but I would start with straight sugar washes until you learn how to use your equipment and fermentations

Sorry ment gin I guess my questions is how difficult is it to make quality booze? .I am not trying to reinvent the wheel. If I follow recipes can I create quality? Not just the cheap crap I can get at the store for 10 dollars a gallon? I guess that is my question?

I can tell you that's it's very easy to make low quality booze.Wink

How difficult it is to make quality hooch is another matter and depends on you and what you mean by "difficult." A lot of it will depend on your personality, your attitude, your willingness (and ability) to learn, your level of patience, how much time you're willing to invest, and your own personal standards. We have had members who bragged about poor practices and bad technique yet seemed quite content with the garbage they produced. And there are those that have been at it for years and remain unsatisfied.

I've been at it for a little over a year and I'm far from satisfied. I receive some very nice compliments from my brothers and my cousins, but I know there is still an awful lot of room for improvement. I've also become convinced that some people are "naturals." Just like some kids are born math wizards or natural born running backs, a few folks seem to be natural born distillers. I'm sure they're out there. But I'm positive I'm not one them.

If you read, stick to a few tried and true recipes, listen to advice, and take your time you'll be able to make some good quality hooch.

Regards,
--JB
