i have made a filter with 3ft of 2inch copper tubing capped drilled end and 7/8 filled with active carbon .then filled the top of my brita water filter whit more active carbon finised tast close to water . i started out with turbo yeast 12.5 lb of sugar used a reflux still with no reflux and got 140 about a gallon filterd once with just the brita waterd down to 85 drank the next day and got a sore throat and small migrain so thats y the over filtration but were did i steer wrong in the first place i read here in a thread that there is no meth in sugar water so collected to 205 my fist time using turbo and copper packing and second time using bentonite for clearing whitch wont work untill 1.000 help i think i have every veriable i think i can offer help ? ps spell check is need here

I'm not real sure that activated carbon is something to filter your product with. I use only stone carbon and have had no problems like you describe. Even though there is no meth in sugar washes, there still are butyl's and isopropels. You might have gotten a snoot full of iso's or butyls. How long, temp wise, did you run the batch? Even so you should still run the reflux I would think at least 2=1 to get it pure, don't know, but I do. Not sure what bentonite is going to do for you health wise, but, use only chem's that are proven and safe, thats my advise, and with a dollar and that advise, you can get coffee anywhere!!!!!Jimbull

I have used the Brita Filtering system from day one. The filters can be snapped apart. Just cut an X in the top of the actual filter and dump the activated carbon, then replace with stone carbon. A small funnel must be used to put the stone carbon into the filter It is a really convenient way to filter your product and the Carafe usually has measurements on them. The best way to do it is to have 2 of them set up. You can pour from one for testing purposes while the other is collecting from the unit. Just swap them out. Jimbull, Bentonite is a clearing agent used to clear up negative charged particles and after the mash is finished you have to use a positive charge chemical to remove those particles. Bentonite is used in the front of wine making before adding yeast. I think the problem is that the finished product was not diluted before filtering. It sounds that he tried to filter before cutting the finished product. Carbon works.

FB, Is bentonite, what I think it is, a clay? It, if it is the mineral that I thought it was, is used in the drilling industry as a drilling mud. Is this the same thing ya'll are takling about? I didn't know,,,,interesting..thanks for the enlightenment!!! JB

Hello tommy Miller, you mentiond 'stone carbon' to clean up a wash. Where can I get this and at what cost? I tried a 'Google' search, but I didn't turn up any thing like you described. I dunno, but I always thought carbon for filtering was made from burnt wood. Thanks for your help.

Jimbull, bentonite is clay base with other things in it. I find it hard to use because it wants to clump and takes some time to get the stuff out of a clump. It is always used at the beginning as a clearing agent I have never found it used at the end. I prefer sparkoloid at the end which works wonderful I have never had good luck with the two part clearing agents.

Thank you Tommy Miller, I've been using aquarium grade activated carbon up till now, but I'll be ordering some stone carbon this coming payday for my next batch!
