scotty,
Other forums require moderator approval prior to account activation. Some have the anti-bot graphics (those funny shaped passcodes) during registration. And some limit access to topics until the new user has been "vetted." Any chance of using any of those mechanisms with this forum software?

its not my call John--Also it probably doesnt take any more time to ban them than to approve them-- Request application for approval may not have the spammers intention visable. then we would have to again process the jerk lol

I have been unable to find where the software allows moderator approval without having to log into the back end and check the posts. We do use a word question, with written answer requirement, but no matter what we do we get the occasional group of spammers getting in.

It's an unfortunate side affect when a site like this starts to get a lot of activity the spammers attack. Hopefully if we ignore thier posts they will go away Maddawgs

We o use a word question, with written answer requirement I was thinking of CAPTCHA ... although the spambots are getting pretty sophisticated these days and are using OCR. This forum is running vBulletin?

We use to run CAPTCHA, but started getting bombarded with spam, so we changed to a word question that requires a written answer. That has slowed things considerably, but we still get little surges once in a while.

Admin - Admin CP - Options - User Registration - Moderator approval (this doesnt happen until the email is verified) The "Awaiting email confirmation" user group and the 'waiting moderation" setting does not allow posting. I'm pretty strict at my bluegrass site which runs this same code and at the same level. You pretty much have to be from the region to get in - how do I know that? - IP address lookup... Same mechanisim you are using to ban forever |

Does it notify the admin and moderators of the new sign up needing approval? I know that when we tried to go to moderated posts it did not send a notification, so we had to manually log into the admin side and check manually. And, given that when it starts if we change the sign up question it stops, I am not sure that it is worth the added effort.

Well, I configured mine to send me an email whenever I get a new user signed up - Since I set it as moderated users, I know I have to roll out there and look at it and make a move. Now, that said, the new user in question has full browse capability so they can see posts and such, but they cannot post, nor can they harvest members by sending mails/PM's with their crappy adverts. And, it ain' foolproof either, Scotty, so you have to remain as diligent as always - My Mods love pulverizing spammers.... |
