" Quote:I dont know how credible this guy is (doubtful very) but he says he uses this recipe and it makes a gallon of shine When in doubt, do the math: 15 lbs of sugar and 4 gallons of water will give you about a 5 gallon wash 1.132 (PA: 20% abv). I measured the gravity of some typical apple juice brands a few months back. They were all in the neighborhood of 1.050. So a fair estimate would be 50 ppg? So your OG would be 1.182. Which would easily put your PA above 25%. I'm going to go way out on a limb here and say that the yeast might have some trouble! Any chance he put the decimal in the wrong place and meant 1.5 lbs of sugar? That would get you to around 1.065 or so ... which sounds fine. --JB"

Yeah unless you're using a turbo yeast no. Even then I'd use maybe 8lbs of sugar..

It is also important to note the quality of the apple juice we are talking about here. The cheap golden stuff from the supermarket has been altered enzymatically (guilty), has preservatives, and acids added to it, possibly more depending on the manufacturer. Those additives don't jive so well with a healthy yeast fermentation...
If you plan on using real apple juice, like you pressed the apples yourself you are fine, but otherwise make sure you buy high quality, organic apple juice that only has 1 or 2 ingredients on the label for a healthy fermentation.

Wow, I've never used apple juice before, but I wouldn't have thought about the preservatives and additives being a factor! Thanks, I would have been scratching my head and wondering what went wrong forever.
