Hi Bayou, good to have you droping in again. I noticed that wasn't your Blichmann under the boiler, waqs there a problem? . Is that a banjo style and what make?

"Hi, I've been running mainly rum, whiskeys, and scotch lately and was not as happy with the flavor comeing through, or lack of, unless I ran deep into the tails and then re-ran it which seemed to lessen the flavor again.

So I did some research and decided maybe Ben Franklin might be right and ""the bubble plate still is superior for the makeing of whiskeys and rum"".

Decided to give it a go and modify my BH setup. I ordered the parts and just got them in so I have'nt tried it yet but here's some pics.

That looks like it should work nicely. Where did you order the bubble plates from, just wondering in case I ever want to make some whiskey or rum. Let us know how it works out...

No no issues with the Blichmann, it's not big enough to support a 55 gallon drum with 50 gallons of wash in it! I bought that stand at Bubbas Barrels

That looks really cool. Now all you need is to add a ferrule to the top and eliminate the rubber bung.

Hi captin, I ordered them from Still Dragon. The view ports on the torpedoes are their SGK's, Sight Glass Kits, not the standard O-rig,lens, and tri-clamp.

I'm going to start a rum wash this week end and hpoefully br able to run it next week end. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi Bayou, glad to hear it was'nt an issue with the Blichmann other than not holding the weight.

I tried to order a ferrule for the top but the shop I get stuff from are out for now. It is in the works though. Thanks for the comps now it's on me to make it work.

My buddy from cape Cod and his new pot still from BH. running his sweet feed the other day. He left it for me to play with and I'm running a rum wash today and my sweet feed tomorrow. Havin' a ball

This is mine, 3' column with three 4' single cap bubble plates, plates have 2' slotted cap with 1.5' riser and 3/4' downcomers . 2' shotgun condenser with four 1/2' vapors tubes inside, 450mm long. 130mm long 3' dephlegmator with five 3/4' inner tubes. sits on a keg with 3 ring burner. Hearts at around 90% ABV , single runs, no more stripping runs yaaay!!! Lol. The rum it produces compared to my pot is 10 fold better!.

Hi googe, looks like a pretty good job. I'm sure you ment 2", (inch), cap and not 2',(foot).

Do you have any problems cleaning out the inside of the cap or down commer? I know the down commer on my small still is a pain to clean.

And how did you make your flanges?

Thanks bushy, yeah 2 " lol. I've only run it a few times so havnt given it a.good clean, not that I probably will lol, I have always done vinegar runs or let the fores clean it. If I do I'd probably use citric acid bath, seems to work wonders. How do you do yours?. I just folded the edges with a hammer for the flanges, and got cork.gasket to suit. I like your still too, looks like it would make a nice rum :).

Hi googe, I can unscrew the caps from the plate and use a vinegar and water solution to clean them . My other small still column is all copper and I've found that if I don't dry it out after cleaning I start getting copper oxidation, you know that nasty blue stuff. So I always blow it out with air and heat the parts up a little to make sure it's dry before storage.

For your copper flange what kind of form did you use with the hammer?

That's awesome crowboy BigGrin. Love hand made stuff!. By form, I'm guessing you mean the way I got the form of it bushy?, I annealed it first then bent the edges out to about 45 degrees with piers then angled more with a ball pane hammer on the anvil part of my vice then finished with the head of the hammer. Is that what you were asking?.

Hi jrcowboys, That's some fine copper work you have done there. You must have a good source for copper.

Yeah googe, that's the info I was looking for. I've read a few threads elsewhere that people had made a form for hammering out the flanges.

Just looking at your still. How is the column joined to the pot? Is it just a friction fit? And, do you have a spec on the thickness of the copper you used? Thanks

The column on both are friction fit i use flour paste to make sure that the seal when I am running them. The copper that I use is 26 gauge. Some people have used 22mil 16oz copper sheetz. I thought I would go a little thicker and see how it worked and so far so good.

I have a partial sheet of copper, .032 gauge, that I have been thinking of turning into either a brew pot or a still kettle. It is about 28 x 36, so I think I could get at least a 5 gallon kettle. Was thinking of putting a 2" snorkle at the top with a couple wraps of No. 12 wire so I could put o-rings between for a seal to my 2" reflux still tower. However, it wouldn't give me much access for cleaning.

Where or how do you access your pot for cleaning?
