"I'm running about 13 gals thru my homemade reflux and ending up with 1.5 gals of spirits between 150p to 120p at the speed I'm distilling. I get about 1 gal of hearts at 130p. After 110p she starts clouding up. I have ran slower and my proof goes up to 170 but it takes for EVER and it drops quickly. So is this a good wash to yield ratio?

15gal wtr
15lbs sugar
sour mash from 3 prior runs
sg 1.050

no yeast added, sour mash did the trick, took about a week and cleared nicely ...IMHO sour is the only way to goCool"

Hi poppy, If you are running 15 gallons of a 10% wash theoreticly you have 1.5 gallons of 100% alcohol available. realisticly you will not be able to recover all of the alcohol from your wash, I would say closer to 1.35 gallons at 93%. in a reflux still. In a pot still you will end up with more product at a lower ABV.

To start with the alcohol content of your wash is low. Your beginning SG should be around 1.80 to 1.90. That will give you a better return for your time.

BTW the name of the game is LOW and SLOW if you want the best you are capable of. Take your time and you'll be happier with what you make.
