I have a brand new hydrometer and it reads a perfect 80 proof when testing my Svedka Vodka but reads 0 proof when testing some blackberry moonshine that is labeled 100 proof. The moonshine will burn a nice blue flame and you can tell its strong when you drink it but the hydrometer gives the same reading as if i were testing plain old water. Any ideas why?

Hi wysiwyg, Welcome to the forum. The hydrometer measures starting or specific gravity in your mash or wash and starting potential abv (double scale). If there is any sugar in the blackberry moonshine the trails and proof alcoholometer will not work. It will only measure the alcohol by volume or ABV in you alcohol/h20 mixture. Hope this helps you out. Maddawgs

Thanks Maddawgs - I figured the blackberries were the problem.
