Hi Sawman, That"s some nice work, I've seen lots of them made from 55gal. drums but never from a propane tank, that's a pretty good Idea. I like the rounded ends again nice work... Captinjack

Sawman, I built my sister a smoker from a 500 gal propane tank, she loves it. It is powered by propane but also has a rack for wood to give it smoke. She is a lawyer and usually cooks for about 100 people on the 4th of July. This smoker will easily handle a whole hog or maybe two. I designed and built the burner from 2"ss pipe with an adjustable air jet so that I could make it burn cleanly, the burner is 36"long and worked the first try, I was happy with that result. It has a heat diffuser to evenly distribute heat and smoke and an integrated trailer for towing. She doesn't use it much now as she has gotten away from criminal law and specialized in SSI disability, therefore she doesn't entertain near as many people as before. If anyone needs a monster like this she might sell it!

Sawman, how do you get that tarry like stuff out of your tanks when you build smokers? I first filled the tank with water, then I cut the hole for the smoke stack, then I let a little water out so that I could cut the doors with a speedie cut. I first cut the line across the top and welded on the hinges, then I cut the rest of the door opening so that I could put in some curved pieces of 1/8th metal for door stops. At this point I let all the water out so that I could cut the vents along the bottom end caps. I did all this with my cutting torch since with the 2 large door openings there was no chance of an explosion. I then welded all the hinges and door latches onto the tank. This is where My question arises, how to clean the propane tank out? I took the tank at this point down to the creek behind my house and built a huge fire with wood inside the tank, I let it burn until it was glowing red, then let it burn out. The next day I towed it back to my shop and pressure washed it, bear metal and no gunk, I called that a do! What do you do?

Hi Old Stump Juice,
I scrape most of the loose stuff with a wire brush, then hit it with a pressure washer. I don't do this until it is complete because i have the outside sanded to bare metal. After it is painted then i clean. After the pressure washing dries i spray the whole inside with vegetable oil then start my fire in the firebox. I try to keep it around 700 for about 4 hours.
What part of Ala? Post a pic of what you are building.

Sawman I live very near Lake Martin, I don't want to get too specific due to the nature of my hobbies. I'm not big on pictures, my phone doesn't have a camera like most others.
