"I will receive my Essential Extractor Pot Distiller- Column this Thursday. Do I have to have copper mesh inside the column? I am home-brewer and plan on running a batch of sweet feed wash this weekend. Of course after a cleaning run...

Copper scrubs a lot of the sulfites and some other nasties out of the vapors. It's always a good idea to have some copper in the vapor path for that purpose. Most folks useing a stainless steel pot still will use one roll of copper mesh in the column stuffed below the cooling tubes.

If you did'nt order copper mesh you can get a PURE copper pot scrubber, stretch it out a little so it does'nt compact too much, and put it in the column. Also some hardware stores sell copper mesh in rolls for rodent control. Rats and mice don't like chewing on it, I guess it hurts their teeth or gums, not sure on that one. I bought a 100 foot roll for $40.00 figure that should last me for a while.

Hi Ace,
Your column should come with all the copper mesh you will need. For reflux mode you should use just about all of it. if it is the 3 inch column then cut it to 11 foot rolls and they should fit perfect. For pot still mode you should only need 1 or 2 rolls.

Hey Maddawgs you did'nt really mean 11 feet/roll did you? That's a little too long to fit, I think it's more like 4 or 5 feet/roll. I use 2 1/2 feet in a 2" column.

Thanks everyone, I will pickup some copper mesh on my next BH order.

Maddawg, I don't think the Essential Extractor Pot Distiller- Column comes with any mesh.

Aceonf4i, You are correct the EE Pot Distiller doesn't come with any column filling. I would do as Bushy says with the pure copper pot scrubber until your next BH order...

Well you titled this thread --Do I HAVE to have mesh????? And the answer is no you dont. But just as all the other posters have stated you will be much happier with the end result if you do. Now with that said, they did'nt use it back in the good ole days (but the good ole days weren't all that good when it came to making hooch) and lots still dont but we know loads more today about what makes good hooch so do yourself a favor and pack your tower with mesh.

Check the grocery store for some and as soon as you make another BH order add that to the list. Since your new you may not even notice a difference but your friends will when they are helping you deplete your drinking stock."

Wow that's a big difference, 2 1/2' to 10-11' for the one inch difference in size of column. How tight do you roll the mesh, I know you don't want to get it to tight and block vapor's but how do know what is to tight? I just want to get it rite when I get my 3" column...

Hi guys, my apologies MD, I have to recant my 2 1/2' statement, I forgot that I fold my mesh in half before rolling it up. So yeah 10 to 11feet sounds right.as I'm useing about 4 1/2 to 5 feet.

Hi Bushy,
Yup I did. It is actually a bit shorter than that. 10.3 to 10.8 inches per roll. I had read somewhere that for a 3 inch column it was 11 feet. In setting up I found this to be a bit to tight so I started cutting off inches until I had a proper fit. You want your rolls to be tight enough in the column so they wont slide out without a little help. I give my column sections a good shake to get them out. If they are to loose you will get channeling and if they are to tight you could have a blockage.

Thanks for the explanation on the tightness of the roll's, I just want to make sure I get it wright when I set mine up the first time and I'm sure you mean feet and inches in your post. Do you use any packing up around the condenser tubes?

Hi CJ,
Yes I used the sections I had to cut off for packing around the condensor tubes. I wound up with 5 hot dog sized (2-4 inches long then rolled). I used a long thin screwdriver to snake them in around the tubes.

Hi CJ,
I basically following the same recipe from Bushy's "yesterday's run" thread. This is the same one I used before but instead of using the turbo I went with 3 packs of EC-1118 that I rehydrated, cultivated and pitched. The wash has been bubbling along nicely for a week now.
