When we tried to use a High-density polyethylene container it imparted a terrible plastic taste in our spirit run. Nothing but glass from now on.

What was in it before you used it? I only plan on using it for mashing, I can't see how it would be any worse than a bucket.

"All of my fermenting buckets are HDPE. I've been using them for over a year with only a single problem. It was after one of my kids used it as a cleaning bucket ... they dumped pine-sol in it and filled it up half way with very hot water. I wasn't able to get the nasty pine-sol smell out of it ... so I use it to store balls now. If you clean them with a bland dish detergent (like dove) and some warm water and a soft cloth, they'll be fine.
BTW: the HDPE is marked with a ""2"" in the triangle stamp that's usually on the bottom.
