"I live is a very remote rural place and don't have a big hardware store anywhere close by. I just got my PSII and am in the process of making the suggested upgrades, but am stuck at replacing the rubber stopper. I can't find a big enough natural cork stopper. I even looked at ebay and they don't have a big enough one listed. Does anyone have a mail order source for a natural cork that will fit the 2"" PSII?

As an aternative I do have a bunch of 2"" copper tape that is used for magnetic field shielding. It has a sticky backing and I think I could apply it to the cork in a smooth even manner. Could I just wrap the cork with copper tape to prevent leaching from the rubber and prevent off favors?

I'm almost done with the mods and can't wait to fire it up, pressure test it, and do my 3 gallon sacrificial wine run this weekend. If all goes well this weekend I have all the ingerdients for my first gerber sugar wash and have a real run the following weekend.

Thanks,
Opihi"

Hi opihi, I've never had a problem with off flavors or degradation from the rubber bung supplied with my unit. That said I would keep a very close eye on your replacement cork bung. Be sure that it completly seals the tower, if not then you will be leaking highly flamable vapors. If it's not made of one piece of natural cork it may degrade also.

Was thanked: 5 time(s) in 5 post(s)
My rubber bung was making a funny smell for my first two runs (my water-only run and my first sugar wash). I gave it a good cleaning with some hot water & dish soap, rinsed it real good and haven't had any problems since. If I could wave my magic wand, I think I'd put a tri-clamp ferrule up there ... an fit it with a S/S cap with and a thermo-couple fitting.
