Hey All,

I've read, read, read, and read some more. I bought a new High Capacity Pro Series II with copper mesh. I bought a fermenter and other things I think I will need to proceed in a productive direction. As I have mentioned, I have read a lot but I'm unsure about controlling the water to the reflux or the condenser and the reasons supporting the control process. I think I got a handle on things and then sure as the day is long I come up with more questions. I'm hoping you guys can help,

"Hi mtshine,

Congratulations on your new equipment! I'm sure you'll enjoy everything.

I'm not sure about what you're asking. Are you asking about how to configure the cooling water lines? Or how to operate your rig? Or both?

Regards,

First off, thanks for the reply...

I think I know what I'm doing, "fatal last words"... I understand how to hook up the condenser lines and the lines to the reflux head. Some have said we need a separate source for each. Since I've never done this before, I'm not sure what goes on in the tower. What I think I understand is that when in the reflux mode you should have the reflux head real cold to increase the reflux action in the tower thus achieving a higher purity. I've read that you should run the supply cooling water to the top of the condenser and the return from the bottom. Something to do with the fact that once the vapor is exposed to a cold condenser at the top, it will not see any greater temps on its way through and remain a vapor instead of possibly flashing back to a vapor. That was a mouthful and I hope I didn't take you too far down the rabbit hole. I plan on feeding the reflux tower and condenser with separated supplies of Ice water but not sure when I need to throttle it back or not???? I've been reading and I'm sure I will eventually get it right but I'm gona be getting in the saddle here soon and I'm not real confident about how to go about it.
Thanks in advance for any assistance,

"I don't use two separate feed systems, just two T-couplings and a valve to control flow to the reflux condenser ... all driven by a single pump from a 45 gallon container.

Your water doesn't need to be ice cold, it just has to be cool enough to knock down vapor in the reflux condenser and condense the vapor in your product condenser. During a long run I do use ice bottles to keep things from getting to warm. Once the water feels luke warm, I'll start dropping the ice bottles in.

The best thing to do it to just get started. Be safe, take your time and enjoy your hobby ... and everything else will fall into place.

Hey JB,
I've been reading the forum and kinda just pokin around. I picked up some more info and I'll keep on doing so. I remember way back when I was an apprentice electrician and my boss told me that if ya wanna learn you have to get a little skinned up once in a while, and that won't happen if just stand around asking questions. Like you said, I'll just do it and see how it goes. Thanks for the info on the water. I'll let ya know how it turns out. Thanks again..
