"I have the easy still now for 5 yrs. I read the carbon book and many posts about filtering.
I seem not to have to much time for doing the filtering like is recommended.
I have been doing it as follows:

Get the .4-.85 premium carbon and wash it in boiling water then fill the whPVC pvc tube that
came with the still or maybe I purchased it.
Then I start the still and discard the first couple of ounces. Then I just put the small plastic hose
from the still in the top of the filtering tube lettialcohol alchol drip into and through the filtering tube.
So there is no continue full volume of alcohol going through the tube but only drips.
I use the same carbon to distill the 5gals of sugar mash. Does anyone else use this or similar method?
I wonder if I used the funnel method if my alcohol would be that much improved?"

"Dont know what the proof of your hooch is but straight off the still is prolly not the proper way to use the carbon filtering technique. I'm pretty sure you should cut your hooch down to 120 or less for proper utilization of the carbon. Try this....make your run and after you collect all you want cut it to 120 or less then pour that through your filter and I bet you'll like the results much better. You can even pour it through the carbon a second time for even more of a smoothing effect.
But really high proof is not gonna work for ya."

Hi blodgee. i have an air-still also and have been using it for around 2 years. The product coming out at first is usually around 130 to 135 proof. I am told carbon does not filter that strength well. I distill my entire wash, Cut that to 55 proof at the most and run it again. Then cut it to 55 proof again with and filter at least once usually more.
