"We have made home brew here for years and it is finally legal but none of the local grocery stores sell the malt syrup that is the main ingredient.
I have 50 lbs of 6 row barley malt and just wondered if it could be used instead of the syrup, if so how much and would extra sugar be required?"

scotty, we just refer to it as home brew, it consist of 1 can of malt syrup, 5 gal water and 5 lb sugar.
I've recently found another recipe that uses apple juice instead of water, and after it stops working you add 1 more gallon of apple juice and another 5lb sugar and if need be another pack of yeast. It takes a lot longer for the second ferment to complete but the brew has plenty of kick when done and taste pretty darn good.

This place will show you proportions of grains-- unmalted and how much malted is needed for conversion.

that recipe sounds like --homebrew BEER. Now with that recipe are you gonna distill it to get the ethanol or are you gonna just bottle it like beer? Neither is wrong I'm just curious as I too make --home brew beer.

heeler, I'm going to bottle it, if I were going to distill it I would simply use water instead of apple juice and only ferment it once as I could run three batches while waiting for that second ferment to finish.

That sounds like some pretty wild apple beer. Do you add any hops? If yes, what kind how much, and at what intervals of the boil?

I'm getting ready to do a summer shandy. Was going to do a 60/40 wheat and barley and add some flaked barley for body and head. When it's about done with the ferment, throw in 4 packages of unsweetened lemon koolaid. Oh, 5 gallon batch and an ounce of cascade hops at 60 minutes of boil.

You need to mash the grains. You dont need the sugar. You can do this with a cooler. Look up DIY mash ton on youtube.
