I'm building the reflux still from the moon shine site
I was wondering if it would hurt to use half raschig rings and half copper mesh for the packing in the colum Ionly have enough rings for half of what they say to use
Also how much of the colum should I pack

I have built this column that you are talking about and all I use is the raschig rings only. I do not cut cost to produce a wonderful product...price is not an option.

I've had better experience with copper mesh packing.

1 It has more surface area resulting in more efficient reflux

2 The brief contact with the copper seems to lend some good qualities to the product ,I"ve heard other people having the same experience with adding a copper element to their distillation. Not sure what the actual chemistry in it is though,.

The downside is that you have to keep the mesh clean ,submerge in some food grade acid like vinegar for a few hours. Its recommended to do so after every 2-3 runs. Though I stay on the clean and safe side and clean them after every run.
