Hello ladies, gentlemen. Another noob here in Va. looking to get started in the hooch hobby. I have been researching, reading, and generally following (lurking I guess) the forums on almost every topic from recommendations on still set up to recipes to temps and times as well as the latest on TTB. I've spoken to a few people at BH about my intended setup and have gotten the blessing. 15 gal PS II HC. 2 element bungs, a drain, copper packing and the gold fermenter package. My only drawback is this dreaded TTB witch hunt. Without going into detail, I don't want to give up what I have attained thru hard work, perseverance, and a "nose to the grindstone" attitude to a bunch of lying, thieving and racketeering people that have no business telling me what is morally right and correct for me. I have been independent my entire life and frankly don't want or need the Govt. deciding what I should or should not do with what little spare time I have. I give to those less fortunate than I. I help my elderly neighbors when they need it and when they don't. And I have served my country honorably and have the papers to prove it. In short I'm not really sure how to go about getting in to this hobby which seems like a lot of fun but at the same time ..... Not piss off the scum of the earth in my backyard (read: Washington). Any and all insight would be greatly appreciated

"Dan,
I can say without hesitation, that if I had to do it again I would build rather than buy. I consider my decision to purchase to be a lapse in judgment and a breakdown in personal discipline. I let my enthusiasm get the best of me.
If you really want to stay off the radar, build your own rig. Otherwise, your information will be handed over like everyone else's. Keep in mind that as long as the manufacturers provide your information to the TTB, they continue to operate within the law. Absent strong personal convictions on the matter, and provided sales don't suffer significantly, I don't see anything that would motivate the manufacturers to attempt changing the status quo.
You clearly have some strong feelings with respect to individual liberty. So why sell yourself out by purchasing equipment?
Regards, --JB"

WhalerD - I agree with JB. I too bought about the same as BH listed, and I am part of the "listed number"... If you prefer "F117" level stealth, BYO is the only way. I'm originally from a little ville north of Lynchburg, so I clearly can identify with your POV, sir |

"The only drawback to byo is the fact that I have no experience and therefore no guidance on the proper construction ..... Let alone the safety aspect of byo believe me... I as well as most other people would not have a whole lot of problems copying someone else's design which I find to be a little un-nerving.... Rick has obviously spent an incredible amount of time in mastering his design and by the ""flavor"" of the numerous forums touting his expertise in this matter I would be MORE than happy to pay his price for the experience gleaned from his years of experimentation...maybe what I should do is jump on the ""re- regulation bandwagon and hope the normal people win out.... But that could take YEARS the way this lumbering behemoth of an inept government we have now operates....
JB.... To you I give the utmost praise in tackling this project head on. I now know that there Re a number of people in this hobby that are indeed intelligent beyond my wildest dreams and will take your advice with nary a second thought....
RCRed... I also thank you for your thoughts"

Understood about lack of experience, but, they's always a way For instance, you could subcontract out parts (or subsections) to local welders, who have the equipment and skill and a good bead. Disperse the work widely enough and it's just an assortment of parts And lord knows, in this economy, folks can always use some extra cash. Just an idea. I bought my equipment for a practical reason (imoa) in that if the government succeeds in making the dollar worthless, we will need means to make things that cannot be purchased any more. Not a prepper, just a realist. Along the way, of course I have to learn the art, and having proper "lab equipment" was a priority for me. Being able to make oils, distill water, etc would be of extreme value. Best Regards and Welcome! RcRed |
