"My CTO just gave me 5 gallons of hopped beer that has been finished. I drank a glass and it is hoppy on the front and malty on the rear. He would like me to distill it and I am too new to know exactly where I should start.

First off I am thinking I need to break down my reflux and try pot stilling this one. Who can give me guidance?

Hi Blaz, If you want to carry over the taste of the beer then potstill it, if you just want to recover the alcohol run it thru the refluxer. Maddawgs

maddawgs can you give a basic idea of what a reflux is and how it works

my assumption is its chambers in the column

Hey Maddawgs! Good to hear from you again. I do want to try to keep some of the flavors so I was wondering if I should do a stripping run first and then make a run where I make cuts, or just make my cuts from the beginning since the abv is only around 6% anyway. (all with pot still)

I was also wondering if there is anything that I should really keep my eye out for. It would be my first pot still run. I had plans to run reflux until I had a lot more experience.. but opportunity knocks :)

I actually found you a more in-depth reference - One I found a tad more definitive for my scientific mind..

I've got copper wadding in my PSIIC column too, but above where the raschid rings go. My column has a stop plate at the bottom of column pipe # 1 (or reflux pipe as I call it -it's only used when refluxing) to hold the chips and packing in. I am searching for whether I should take that copper out before I reflux with rings. Thought I read somewhere it wasn't good to use both....

yep the link describes my typical run to the t almost but i dont use Celsius temps and i dont use anything below 45% to make my cuts if needed

Well, I just convert the celsius to farenheight using an online calc BigGrin BH parent page and HD have temp converters or google or bing for one. After you use it a couple of times it's gets easy to swag the conversions on your own. But then again, I'm a math freak as part of my work...

aaah i can convert it but its not necessary for me to follow along it all starts to happen above 140 f - 180 f is the sweet spot

Hi Blaz, Sorry can't help with the potstill stuff. I don't like to offer advice on things that I have no experience with or have not done the research on. About all I know about potstilling is it is what you do when you want to carry over the flavor from your mash. Maddawgs

Not a problem. One way or the other I will some experience in something new. All it will cost me is the electricity to try it :)

yes sir!! Only problem is.. I keep building new ideas... but I guess that is the other beauty, it always makes you want to improve your equipment and your experimentation :)
