Walmart Great Value brand distilled water turned my hooch cloudy

"It was 88 cents a gallon so I thought I would try. Bad mistake  This never ever happens when I distill my own. Should I rerun it or is it still fit for human consumption?"

Interesting...I had a gallon of the same but no clouding at all with it. I made star san bottles with about half, and the other half I used as dillution.

The expiration date was some time in 2014 so it shouldn't be bad. It has no smell as to be expected.
Can I drink the cloudy hooch or should I rerun it?

Stick a jar in the fridge and let it sit undisturbed for a few days. If some sediment forms, then you know it was due to mineral content in the water (which is less soluble in alcohol ... so it'll precipitate) . If you see the oils forming at the top, then you may have taken a bit more tails than normal.
Personally, I would just add the cloudy stuff to my next run. If it's due to mineral content/tails it's purely aesthetic provided the tails aren't too offensive. But for me appearance is part of the experience ... that's why I would run it again.
If you experiment with something other than your normal water supply, maybe try diluting 50 mL or so and let it sit for a few days. It won't hurt if you let the rest of your product air a bit longer while you wait to see what happens.

It ain't tails. I done my cuts with great care. The hooch is as clean as it gits. Just had some mixed with lemonade, can't hardly taste it for the lemons. If there's any left by my next run I'll throw it in. Otherwise I'll just drink it. Don't think I'll be using any more of the Wally World water tho. Gonna stick to making my own.

This is common when you have minerals in the water that are soluble in water but not alcohol. They will slowly precipitate out, or you may be able to filter them out with a very fine filter paper.

I used wal-mart distilled water and had no problems with clarity, no doubt they get their water from different sources depending on the location of the store.

Put the jar in the fridge for 24 hours and it's still cloudy. No precipitate at all.

Maybe it was jes a bad jug, Fritz... My gallon jugs also expires in 2014 and it's fine.
If it won't clear up, I'd just rerun it. |

Unless it imparted a taste you don't like.....I can certainly understand the apprehension to rerun. The time alone is signifcant and you'll lose a bit, but it really comes down to your own choices  |

Just a thought ... any chance your glassware had something on it? I remember reading something quite a while ago about some issues with glassware that was put through the dishwasher ... and not thoroughly rinsed.

A good test to see if it is fusels and not the water causing the clouding would be to add more high proof alcohol and see if it clears again.

John, it was in a half gallon jug. I didn't wash it, I just rinsed it out real good. It previously had hooch in it and it wasn't cloudy.
I'll try adding some clear and see what happens.

i have had the same problem with wm distilled h2o.good wiskey just a little cloudy.i tried filtering it with coffee filters.that process helped a little but didn't clear it all the way.

I ended up rerunning it. I like to share and cloudy hooch makes people suspicious. I proofed the last batch with my own homemade distilled water and all was well, no cloudy so there was something in the Walmart or maybe plasticizers leached from the jug into the water. Walmart is known for using the absolute cheapest packaging in their own branded products so this wouldn't surprise me. Anyway, I'll be making my own distilled water from now own.
