"Looking for your advice as to aging the rum. Do you recommend a wooden barrel and how long should I expect this to take?

Thanks"

They don't age rum long in barrels from what I have read. I've made rum and I just used oak sticks or chips for about 24 to 48 hours in a glass quart jar. It would depend on how big the barrell and how much rum you are talking about I think. The distilleries use 50 gal barrels and if you used a 5 gallon it would age 10 times faster because of surface area contact to the volume of rum.

well i bought a mexico barrel and after 4 months it sprung a leak / certainly not good for years of storage IMO
every three to 4 months a barrel needs to go for a swim to keep the outside of the wood from drying out even being full to the top they can and will leak
