"  dont want to kill myself,i got 2 used 5 gal buckets from the feed store,they had sealed packets of rat bait in them,no product ever touched them clean and no smell at all,can i use these to store corn and other grains???if not i will get some rubber maid tubs,and use these to store fertiziler.thanks"

I dunno bro.. for 4 bucks you can get brand new ones from Home Creepo... I'm paranoid about stuff that had rat poison in em... But I'm overly cautious to a fault any how...Sealed packets I understand.. maybe it's fine... |

Another good source of cheap (free) buckets is the bakery department in large super markets/super stores (Sam's, Acme, etc.). The icing they use comes in 3 to 5 gallon food grade buckets. They rinse the buckets & throw them out. If you ask for an empty icing bucket at the counter, they're usually more than happy to give whatever empties they have sitting in the work areas. Best times are Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings since they're filling orders for weekend parties. Where I go, they used to have round 5 gallon buckets and lids with rubber gaskets ... which you could use for anything (cooling water, fermenting buckets, storage, etc.). They switched over to rectangular buckets (about 4.5 gallons & no rubber gasket) ... not good for fermenting, but perfect for storing gain ... they take up less space & stack better. All the buckets need is a quick hot water rinse and a wash with some dish soap & rag to get rid of the icing smell. Regards, --JB"

Cabo, if you've tom Thumb's, HEB, or Brookshires stores w/bakeries near you, they'll suffice.. They usually have the 3 gal ones.. I got a number of them from Brookshires and HEB bakeries. If it's a haul to get to them, then, call ahead, and ask them to hold them back for ya (They have for me before) and then the drive is worth it  JB gave me this same tip early on, and it was most beneficial. I have been using brew buckets for mine, but was wondering if there was anything bigger that I could use, something at least 25 to 30 gal?

I'd definately look elsewhere for free buckets because the ones you mentioned could have a harmful residue inside. A rule of thumb is that if you have a doubt about something in terms of either equipment or ingredients, don't use it.
