"Bought a hydrometer now trying to learn how to use it. It is a beer/wine hydrometer. My sf mash started at 1.06 before pitching the yeast. I filtered it last night after 10 days. It was .990. According to what I have read here that gives me an ABV of 9.03. The recipe is the basic sf recipe: 4"" sf, 6+ lb sugar, 3 packs Red Star yeast.

Is this about where it should be? I will be letting it set about a week before running it. (Not even going to think about it at -3 degrees). How can it be used to tell the ABV of the finished product. All the instructions are for beer and wine.

Thanks to all who have answered my questions."

"Hi cork,

Generally a sugar wash/sugar head will finish below 1.000. So at 0.990 it's probably finished.

You'll find different abv estimates based on original gravity (OG) and final gravity (FG). But they will all give you a ballpark abv. There's a calculator at:

http://www.brewhaus.com/Calculators-C108.aspx

Take a look at the following links for more info on using your hydrometer.

http://www.stevenson-reeves.co.uk/howto.htm
http://www.howtobrew.com/appendices/appendixA.html

The second link has a temp correction chart.

You are going to have to have a alcohol meter to get a reading on your final product.
