I have a brewhaus alcoholmeter. When I check the meter against a known alcohol it is off by about 4% alcohol content (reads 36% when should 40%) at 63 degrees. Based on chart I know it should be adjusted by less than a degree for temperature. I see the spacing is not linear on the meter, the spaces between 0-20% are a lot closer than between 70-90%. So my question is, is there a way to calculate what the correction I should use for determining the actual %alcohol of my product if my alcoholmeter reads 90%. For purposes of this question we can take the temperature out of the equation.

you should read it from the top of the meniscus. that could be the discrepancy

It is common for commercial spirits to have a small amount of glycerin or even glucose in them to give them a bit more mouth feel. This is especially true of flavored spirits. Anything added to the spirit that changes the density of the liquid at all will mess up your readings.

are you sure they were both the same temp? I'm sure its possible to get hydrometer that's off a little. If you cant live with the descrepency then return it or just know that its a little higher than it reads and go with it. Once you get ta goin with the hobby 4% really is nothing to fret over IMHO. Personally I would'nt worry about it.

Thanks Heeler, not too worried about it but like to keep accurate notes so if (when) I break this alcoholmeter I will be able to have a good comparison.
