What products and tools to clean and sterilize fermenters, hoses, stills and funnels, etc? Especially how to clean a fermenter barrel/bucket. What cleaners and how to rinse and store clean equipment for next round. Thanks, B.

"I use StarSan which is a no-rinse sanitizer, seems to work for me though. I never really sanitize anything before hand, I clean all my stuff and put it away for the next time, but before I make a wash I always -- sanitize everything again at the start right before I get going on another one. StarSan comes in a concetrate and I mix it in a spray bottle and whilst I'm getting things together I just spray all my goodies...seems to work for me. I'm sure there are other ways but this seems to work. Bleach will work just fine too but you MUST RINSE EVERYTHING very good because if you leave any bleach on the surfaces and it gets in your wash you can't save it, the bleach WILL kill your yeast. It does work you just have to rinse really good."

I am with Heeler. I now use star-san. However I never had a problem with hot water and dish soap. I just got tired of rinsing everything 3 or 4 times.

So , with the StarSan, you just spray all the surfaces and let it drip dry? Then you retreat just before using the next time. How about cleaning the copper condenser? Will just flushing out and spraying StarSan thru be good? On the column, pull the packing and clean separately, then flush and treat the inside of the column? My glassware will be done in the dishwasher at home, pint and quart Mason jars. I may have to clean up the brew shack. At least knock down the pigeon nests. B.

"Well I dont do it that way.......what I do is just rinse everything when I'm done making a run and put it away for the next time, now then.....when I'm gonna get a wash together I spray the fermenter and the top, then I let it sit whilst I'm getting my wash together and heating my water. Then just before I add my sugar and adjuncts I rinse the top and the bucket. Then add all the goodies and locker down. (StarSan is a no rinse sanitizer but I do) I never spray my tower or boiler or condenser but I guess you could...remember you are gonna be running steam through the tower and condenser and the boiler will be pretty damned hot too. I never put my jars in the dishwasher but you can, and as to the packing well I just pull it and rinse it with the hose as I'm rinseing everything else to put away."

Heeler, Thanks, I want to be sure not to miss some step which could cause trouble down the road. Plenty of other ways I can get wires crossed up. B.

Star-san in the column is kind of a waste to me... As Heeler said, it's gonna get steamed. for my 2 pence, the copper packing, I wouldn't clean that until it needs it (couple-ta-three runs). And even then, that's done with Citric Acid and water. Star san will not clean the copper, just makes it blacker (don' ask how I know) I just rinse the column at the end of a run with output from the cooling hose, down the column and then let dry until next time... |

guess what, bro? I'm still a "new" guy compared to most here Glad to help any time...I was really really anal about the sterilization at first, too. Along the way, they have better'd my view of things. |

I make wine also so I keep my fermenters really clean - I use Easy Clean which is very similar to Star San. As far as the kettle & column - just was it out - you are boiling a high alcohol product through so it's self cleaning.
