I see that I am not the only chemist here. Most of the posters here seem to be well-educated.

A physician once told me that consumption of more than a pint of liquor a week is excessive. But it's pretty easy to consume a pint a day or more if one likes to sip in the evening. ,presuming that we're not drinking on the job during the day.,

The medical community is often overcautious. I recall the fit that the American Hearth Assn. had when the insurance industry revised their weight tables upward, realizing that people with a little extra weight are actually healthier. Recall the flap over egg consumption. Now the AHA admits that moderate egg consumption by people who are otherwise healthy does not adversely affect one's health.

What is a 'common' consumption level ,I won't say 'average', for the home distilling community? Do you take vitamins to protect against some negative effects of consumption such as the depletion of serum folic acid? Do you watch the color of your urine? Urine that is consistently dark usually indicates a liver problem. Urine should have the color of oat straw when it is not overly concentrated. Do you make an effort to otherwise have good nutrition?

If you're taking Zocor ,a statin that reduces serum cholesterol,, be very careful as the combination of Zocor ,and other statins, and alcohol can cause liver problems.

Re-reading my above post, it could be construed as preachy, but that is exactly the opposite of my intent.

I've been distilling for a long time with a home-made pot still. I converted a pressure cooker and some 1/2 inch copper tubing into a still. Drill holes in the top of the pressure cooker that will fit the copper fittings to connect the tubing to the lid. Run the copper tubing into one side of a 'two holer' kitchen sink, make a number of loops of copper in the sink ,which will be filled with cold water when the still is running, and run the output to a clean fruit jar in the other sink. It works but it is impossible to control the foreshots, head and tails.

I recently bought a pro II essence exctractor and it is running now with my first batch. You can hear and see the bubling.

It seems to me that the medical community contends that there is no such thing as a healthy drinker. I'm not sure that I believe that.

I want to start a discussion about what people do to stay healthy.
