"So I need to make a power supply/ PID controller for my essential oil extractor and I put together an idea with the use of my kid's crayons. The only think I would change on this drawing would be to place the two outlets in series rather than parallel. Please disregard the PID part, I need to figure this out after I actually get the thing. I might through a neutral line in there for the pid and alarm, but plan to use the 2 hot lines of the 220 to complete the heating circuit. I say this in advance to just get that out of the way. I was reminded that 220 lines can complete their own circuits because they are out of phase with eachother (like in a dryer or oven). I know my use of jargon is horrible here, but I think the principle is sound.

To be clear, I want to design a PID controller to manage 220V 40A circuit to run 2x 1500W heat bands from Brewhaus.

thanks

BTW, any good and SIMPLE circuit drawing software for free? I think my hand drawn stuff is a work of art Wink but it could help on future projects"

I suppose more explanation is warranted. I do not have enough power available in the location I am using the extractor so I needed to make a new circuit. Because I am using 2 heat belts that required roughly 27amps of power, I felt it would be better to use one 220 circuit versus 2 110 circuits and putting together a 30amp 110 circuit seemed dubious. I want to feed the 220V 40A power into the control box, have it regulated by PID, that feeds 2 outlets where one heat belt would plug into each outlet.

I tried drawing in Paint in hopes of improving the picture. Again, this has no neutral but I may place one particularly if the PID would work better with one. The PID I am looking at is fine up to 250V so I may not. You will note a switch in the second line so I can turn it off and avoid the risk of grounding the circuit with my leg if it were to brush up against the wrong part. By placing the outlets in series, the power should be split, bringing the voltage back to 110 for each heating belt.

Edit: the outlet and switch are rated for 20amp.

So this worked out great. The switch was nice, in order to turn it off and act as a secondary safety point. These heating belts kick butt.

what size boiler do you have and how long does it take to heat up

I have the 13gallon premium kettle from Brewhaus. Time, jeez. On a 10gallon stripping run I would say it took at least an hour to 1 1/2 hours to make it to 60C. Maybe a bit longer. I am always doing something else at the time, so I have not timed it. I feel the like the 2 heating belts were a good idea, but I am very new at this so my expectations may not be appropriate.

I'm probably paranoid but am suspicious of new members trying to ""draw"" opinions from members given the recent letter I received from the ATF. Until the current O' Admin is gone, I'm not posting anything to this forum. I don't trust the government we now have."

Maybe it is still jetlag, but I do not understand this part of your post. Please clarify so that I can take care of any issues promptly.

It's probably the jetlag ... but it took me a few reads to understand as well!

But fear not, Rick! Everyone wants you to stick around!

I'm sure cczero is referring to a certain ""O"" sitting in a big office on Pennsylvania Avenue in DC. :)"

I'm just saying there has been several posts from newbies asking questions which after receiving my ATF letter I feel a little paranoid. It's not Brewhaus I'm concerned about, it's Obama and his thugs. Paranoid? Probably.

Excellent! I'd have chimed in, but I'm not much help with circuits.

Not a fragment of paranoia on my part... these forums are for people to get help."
