Just ran my first run.The mash went well but my amazing still seems slow , about 100ml in 18 hours,.Anyone else using this setup that can compare the time?

what is the temperature difference between the ambient air outside the still and the temperature u have ur heater set at? a higher temp difference yields quicker product, but also a lower quality. when i run mine, i usually set it at 122 F and have the ambient air temp around 72 - 75 F ,in a humid climate, and closer to 80-82 F ,desert climate - dry,. i usually get a return of about 3L in 4 days with the second temps and about 3L in 3 days with the first temp setup.

those sound like good numbers... only i would recommend if it seems to be going slower than it should is to double the installation directions... also, are u using any of the optional insulation or lid setups? or just the tub with cleared mash in the larger bucket?? on mine, i have the thermometer threaded through the bung, but there is still a gap around the wire that i plug with a small piece of paper towel... i also usually have a small ,.5A or so, fan blowing across the upper section of the setup.

thankyou for your help.I have checked it out and it seems like I did most of it right. On my 10 litre bucket I have cut holes, 5 , in the top and I have not used any insullation. It is hard to tell if there is suppossed to be a lid or not so I cut the holes.also I did not buy the digital thermometer, could my heater dial by out a bit?I bought it from rick at brewhaus.

I forgot to mention that it seems that my mash is turning pink, however the 125 ml on 'product' i have got so far is crystal clear and smells great.Could it be the sparkaloid?

i too do the sparkalloid. sometimes i have a very faint pink at the very end of a run. i have the digital thermometer but am considering only using it every several runs as a check b/c so far the heater setting has been pretty dead on. i have - the large 32 gal bucket, small bucket upside down in the bottom, lip-removed bucket lid on that, then the 10L pail with 7-8 liters of mash with the 32L bucket lid on. the only lid i have actually locked onto a bucket top is the 32L main bucket. i just set it and forget then for 3-4 days. let me know how that differs from ur setup.

So do have a cover on the 10L bucket at all ?In the diagram it does not show a lid on the 10L bucket but in the photograph it shows a lid with two holes cut in the side.Maybe I should take the lid off my 10L bucket. Thanks for your help !

Scott, i know the diagram/instruction conflict ur mentioning... and i do not have a lid on the 10L pail, i still have the lid i got with it, but i do not use it. that should make the process much quicker... you might even be able to increase the quality u have now by shrinking ur ambient-to-heater temperature difference and still get product faster than u were previously.

haven't tried the insulation yet. so far, the original 'plain' design works plenty well for what im wanting... the most important thing i've noticed is to do the mash right b/c with the amazing still, a lower ABV mash than u wanted yields lower ABV alcohol... u cant just get the same ABV product but less of it without taking great pains... if u try the insulation, lemme know how that works out.

Sparkolloid should not cause your mash to go pink, however, the dies = used in white sugar can give a slight hue to the mash. Most often it is = a green hue that you will get, but depending on the brand of sugar, I = have heard of pink, as well. It is nothing to pay any attention to.

to test ur mash, u need to measure the specific gravity of the water/sugar mix before fermentation and then the specific gravity of the mash post fermentation and use the calculator on the brewhaus.com webpage. that is how i do it...
