I think I may have cleaned my copper packing too well. I distilled some moonshine today and it is red. Has anyone ever had this happen? Can the copper be filtered using carbon?

you sure the column didn't maybe puke by being to full or maybe a foamy wash like rye ? I don't think carbon would do that much good. If it were me I would just put it with my feints collection and do another run.

Coupla q's...

  1. What type of wash did you put thru there?
  2. What was the copper packing cleaned with?
  3. when rinsed did you leave it sit in clean water a while ? And do it twice?
  4. Did the packing set for a few days afterwards and possibly had some moisture left in it?
I use citric acid compounds to clean my copper, but I rinse the hell out of it. I take my copper plates and caps completely apart when cleaned and rinsed, and then after I reassemble them, I dip(rinse again) them in clean water when I am restacking them in the column. I feel that if one doesn't reload them back into the column right after cleaning, I need to rinse them all to remove any dust or other surface particulate that may have settled on the works while it sat on the bench (covered or not - cloth has lint too).

Agree with a feint toss, thou..Sorry - I know how much work that is..
