Greetings!

I Plan on building a filter this weekend, I know it has to be 1.5' x 60' I plan on using 2 coffee filters at the bottom to hold the charcoal in the pipe. my question is what should the pipe be made out of? If I use PVC I can place a cap on the bottom with several small holes drilled in it to hold back the carbon, it would also keep a lot of pressure off the coffee filters.

Can I use PVC or Polystyrene for the pipe?

Thanks!

K

if you would like, i can find the site again, but at the start of my distilling beginning days ,which arent over yet, i was researching materials out of which to make a still column. PVC is not rated for use with alcohol, so i would recommend not using PVC, however at room temps like you would have it at, it might be a different story.

I use potable grade pvc and it's fine. I first made a tube that had a cemented cap, but the fumes from the cement contaminated the device so I cut it off. i use two coffee filters taped to it. It's a bit hillbilly, but oh well it works.

Hey guys I,ve got some 2in. copper tubing I can use for a filter tube. What I need is ideas for connecting to a resivour in order to hold the spirit as it is filtering down. I would like to filter a couple of u.s. gallons at a time. Any ideas?

My only comment is that it has been proven that 1 1/2 inches diameter is the pipe to use. No bigger, no smaller. Go to homedistiller.org and read why.

I have read where Gert Strand recommends that 1.5' is necessary, but then if you look at the ones sold commercially, Carbon Snake uses a 3/4' hose, and the Z carbon filter uses a 1' tube. I think there is a 2' one out there also.

Unfortunately, you cannot assume that just because something is sold commercially it will function well. Gert Strand is one of the most knowledgeable people around with respect to activated carbon and its use with alcohol, so I would stick to his recommendation of a 1.5' diameter minimum.

Rick, I agree. folks should not just assume anything.

I am working with those guys who are starting Shine Magazine. I've already written one article for the first edition and have a second one started, but for the second issue I will see if I can get some of these companies to loan me one their filtering systems so I can do a sceintific comparison and report it back to you folks.
