Cleaner type of activated charcoal?

"I'm brand new here and don't claim to know anything, but with posts saying most activated charcoal being dirty, has anyone thought about buying smaller quantities that are usually sold for fish tanks-aquariums? Seems to me this stuff HAS to be clean right out of the box or it would kill fish real quick. I imagine it does cost more, but if its ready to go without all the hot water rinse- soaking, might be worth it??? Also, hello... this is my first post and I am seriously considering buying an easystill just to get my feet wet with the hobby. Called and spoke to Rick this evening and he seemed very nice. First time ever dealing with this hobby.  "

Married, There is one heck of a lot of differance or filtering algae and fish turds out or a large tank of water, which are pretty large conglormeates, and the need to filster a small bit of fusel oils almost the same size as ethanol. A filter can elimite rocks, small organic waste, microbes and such. good for fish. In our situation we want to filter out an oil, that is tltally near alch, Needs a spedial carbon to accompish that. Nuff said. you can distill above the need to carbon filter or spend your time filtering. good luck , enjoy, and learn as I have. 100% of the fun."

"Hey, I was new to the hobby until last year and now it's ended up as more then that. As for the carbon, buy what Rick's got on the site and wash it a couple of times then build yourself a carbon filtering tube. I use a fine mesh screen inside of mine to keep the carbon in and a unbleached coffee filter on the end of the tube. Cost me about $12 for the parts at Lowes + the carbon. Works like you wouldn't believe! (1 1/4 inch PVC a couple of bends and an set up at the end to put a 3/8 tube on - Lowes has everything in one isle). Regarding a still - you can't beat the Pro Series II High Cap - it's not cheap but man it works great! Good Luck!" Thanks for the info all. Yes, I have lots to pickup on so I am reading a LOT. VERY neat funnel! Sounds affordable too...
