I know this is a dumb question but how do you use this thing? I have siphoned with just a hose but what makes this one so special?

"it has a attachment that helps keep the trub out. i found that a turkey baster helps to get it started. i hope this helps.

"Thanks, so I guess its just a steel tube with a hose attached to it. I thought there was some sort of one way check valve in it that would self prime it by bouncing the steel tube verticaly in the wash to get it going Hmm....... I think I'll modify this one "

"i believe you are right. this is the easiest siphon i have used. it helps to have a clip so you can keep it suspended above the lees. all you have to do is suck on the hose or use a turkey baster. i don't mind sucking on it (no comments please. lol) unless i am using it on the cleaning run. i use a disinfectant for a three sink bar system. tom play with it and after a short while you should see how easy this is to use. i hope this helps.

do you mean to empty your fermenter? i am not sure how it would handle the solids in your wash.. i think it would be harder to clean your pump after using it to empty your fermenter. if you mean to start the siphon i don't see the point. all you have to do to start the siphon is to suck a little wash into your tube and then lower the hose. you will find that gravity does the rest. this isn't like siphoning gas. you don't have to get a mouthful. just play with it a little you will get the hang of it. make sure your bucket is lower than your fermenter. please dont take this wrong but i try to stick to the old kiss method.
