Started a batch of rum with 5 lbs Brewhaus molasses, 2 1/2 lbs white sugar, 1 1/2 lbs brown sugar, 16 ltrs of H2O and 62g of Rum Turbo. Started at sg 1075, went down to 1000 after only 24hrs and stopped. I would like to get it to 980. Is this speed typical of rums? Any suggestions on getting it started again or should I just move ahead?

Because of the unfermentables in molasses, you are not likely to get much below 1.000, if at all. Also, due to the osmotic pressure in a molasses fermentation, you will find it very difficult to exceed 11-12% abv.

Thanks for the quick response! I"ve only run 7 previous batches but based on that limited experience, it doesn"t look like this one is going to clear very well. Any cause for concern?

It can be difficult to get washes to clear at times, especially if there is a lot of dissolved gas in the liquid. Try stirring vigorously 5 or 6 times over the course of a day, and then if possible also put the fermenter in a cool area. Degassing is most effective when the liquid is warm, but clearing can be slow if the liquid is not cool.
