The book i read about still building wasn't to clear on whether or not methanol was produced it the fermentation process. It just said to get rid of the heads and tails of the distillate. what amount makes up the heads and tails say if I have a 25l wort/wash at about 15% acl?

the 1st. 100ml's of distillate will contain methanol of a 25L wash.

No, the 100ml's will not change the percentage. I collect in 500ml bottles and measure the abv% on each one, I start collecting tails at 50%abv and keep collecting down to 30%abv, saving the tails for my next batch to distill. The tails contain water fusil oils and other unwantables.

about how much good final product could i expect to get out of a 25l wash at 15%alc? Or is it different every time? I have a 25l bucket fermenting away made of water, sugar, and turbo yeast 8kg. it says it should get up to 20%alc. I have a pro series essential extractor reflux still.

"If your still is a reflux still and you control your heat at the top of the column, you should get about 2 liters at about 90 to 94%abv after that your percentage will drop so keep an eye on it and measure you abv every 500 ml's.
If your still is a pot still, you'll get more since your output will on average 60 to 70%abv from the start. Of course if you're wash is a sugar wash you'll probably be using a reflux still."

"A reflux still is able to make a more pure product because of the way it distills. This web site explains it a lot better than I can. http://www.homedistiller.org
Also, the 1st 100 mls will not change the % of the abv since you'll have a mixture of methanol and alc. If you keep the temp at the top of your colomn as close to 75-76 degrees cel you should have an abv of 92 -95% for your first 1.5 liters collected and will start to drop every 500mls."
