This may be a stupid question but I have to ask, if the wash is exposed to air how long before it starts turning to vinegar? I want to run my latest wash thru a filter because I've let it settle out now for a week yet it still is very cloudy even though I used sparcolloid . It's still in my ferment bucket tightly sealed and outside with night time temps of 40F to 55F during the day. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Breezy 46

Breezy 46 If you have it tightly sealed, it will last for months. If when open for adding sparkaloid or such, just hope a fruit fly doesn't dive in. If its a sugar wash and the ABV is high it is pretty well protected. Let it settle clear is best. Doesn't have to be perfectly clear for stripping run. I often set my wash, mash outside in freezing weather, and next morning take out the floating ice. Thats a type of stripping still in itself. Old timers here used to do it to concentrate apple jack. You can also add feints to increase ABV and protect it if needing to store it a while."

mtnwalker2, thank you for your quick response.It is a sugar wash or mash? lol I will get the terminology down someday. So from what you are saying is that even if I use sparkaloid it takes quite awhile to clear? Sorry to be such a "Newbie" but I've got to start somewhere and any advice I can get is one step closer to where I want to be. One last question, I've read about a Super sparkaloid that works great but they did'nt mention where to get it. Have you heard of this stuff? thanks again for you time. breezy46

Sparkaloid and SuperKleer work pretty fast like in a few days but a few more will let it all settle out better but its really not needed for distilling, if it were a wine then you would wab=nt to give it about 2 weeks. If using just sugar then it is a wash, if using grains and stuff like that it becomes a mash. I like the SuperKleer myself as you dont have to boil anything and it works as fast.
