"I'm new to this but have been making beer and wine for a while. one thing has me confused, if a standard sugar wash is 10lbs sugar to each 5 gal water then how is the result wash 20% (btw is this ABV or ABW) because by my calculations wash should be 1.092SG and if you get complete fermentation to 1.000SG then your then you should have 4.78% ABW or 6.04% ABV. have I mistake in my calculations or shouldn't it 16lbs to 5 Gal water for 1.148SG -> 1.000SG for 15.84% ABW or 20.02% ABV?
other then speed is there reason to a turbo instead of a slower high ABV (18-20%) yeast like Red Star Premier Cuvee that produces few congeners"

Actually, an OG of 1.092 with a final of 1.000 gives you 11.5% abv, which seems in line with 10lbs of sugar in 5 gallons of water. For yeast, if you are fermenting a simple sugar / water solution, then without the addition of numerous vitamins, minerals, macro and micro nutrients you will not give your yeast the nutrition that it needs to do its job. That is the biggest advantage to turbo yeast- the fact that everything the yeast needs is included.

"palm -> forehead
I redid the numbers and came out w/ 12.23% but that is optimal which life never is so 11.5%apx sounds realistic"

I come out with just a tad over 12%abv and as a wine and beer maker for many years I agree that without adding acids and energizers and nutrient the wine yeast will struggle and actually produce more congeners and probably end up with a stck fermentation and a H2S problem.
