With a simple corn sugar wash and turbo 48 I've been doing a intial quick pot still stripping run. A couple of batches or more go in for a full reflux. I always get a solid stable 79 degrees or so centigrade at 92-94 ABV. But I always have a problem of making the cut from Head to Hearts?? Temp smell ABV is so constant so should I even worry?? Tails are no problem. Adding the recommended amount of baking soda for the reflux didn't seem to make a difference. ARE my Taste Buds shot or what?BigGrinBigGrinConfused

"Hi Fred,

I presume you have your column insulated. If not do so.

When you first reach a hot column, adjust the water flow to achieve 100% reflux. I run it this way for about 15 min. but a lot do it for an hour. This allows the foreshots and heads to seperate and congregate in the column. Then adjust water for a slow drip takeoff. This will concentrate the heads makeing it much easier to make the cut. Make sure you dilute before tasteing with cold water. Usually about a qt. more or less.

Then for the hearts you can increase speed. Just check now and then that you are maintaining purity. This can go fairly fast. I use propane so I can adjust the heat input while retaining a lot of reflux."

I get it. High water flow to the reflux tubes thus keeping the temp low allowing only the foreshots and heads to squeak out THEN up the burners or lower the flow to get an equilibrium that satisfies me. Always seemed to me that the temp darn near jumped right to 79 on me. same rules apply slow slow take your time. I use propane now and probably had the burners too high to get things rolling sooner and waited too long before cranking it down to a proper simmer. DUH
