I bought a column for filtering and hated it. It worked but was a real PITA chore.

Upon reading, I bought a 6.5 gal. glass carboy, put a packet of carbon from Brewhause in it and added 5 gal. of neutral cut to bottleing strength, which for me is 50%. Airlocked it, and every day or whenever convenient, popped the airlock to allow it to breathe and swirled it.

Came out super clean, and better than the column for me. I would just pour off what I needed andlet it rest.

I was doing this with 95% extremely neutral to start with.

At the end when I cleaned the carbon, it was horrific in oder and oils.

filtered the takeoff through coffee filters in an 8"" ss strainer. Really neutral."

Is there a good way to get the neutral out of the carbouy with out getting the carbon too. I tried to put a coffee filter on top of the bottle but it plugs up with the carbon.

"Is it common practice to filter ""all"" distillate, even that which is pot stilled for flavors such as with a corn mash? My first impression was that filtering is only for neutral spirits such as vodka, but recent postings I have read now have me in doubt. Should I filter my corn mash whiskey or will it remove the flavors I am trying to produce?

Thanks..
PWB"

Only filter through activated charcoal if you want a neutral. Others have talked about filtering through maple or such charcoal which is not activated. Ten. whiskey is the only one I know of that does this. Ageing on oak and aereating is what you want to aim for a quality flavor."
