Does the use of plastic funnels give the distillate an off or foul taste,I poured a half gallon thru a plastic 2 or 3 times while adding water to get the proof down to 80 and I noticed it was milky looking, anyone got any info? rcm243

"I think it depends on the quality of the plastic and how long the contact and how high the ABV? Though I have used plastic, but now use ss, it never had off tastes. Mine were all a quick run though. I do think there are some cheap plastics out there that may give you some problems.

Even Pyrex dishware is exploding these days."

"i read that going to 40 will sometimes get milky but then will clear. i used plastic to transfer 80% while diluting and it did not effect the color of distilate. my guess would be that the distilate would have to come in comtact with the plastic for awhile before it would produce off color---

just a guess though"

Some plastics will leach like hell & others will stand up (some liquor now in plastics). I follow the old rule & never use plastics after the fermenting stage. Glass & SS only. Why take a chance? SS funnels are cheap.

I use a plastic funnel for everything. However, it is a chemical resistant funnel and I've never had any problems with it. Buying a stainless steel one would have probably been cheaper!:)

Maybe it was your water and not the funnel?
