I am very new at this and had a question concerming cuts. I have a sugar distillate from 50% to 95%, I have tossed the foreshots and have several mason jars containing the heads, middle and a small amount of tails. Can I put it all together and then cut it to 43%, or will using so much of the higher % cause headaches?

Yes, it is the heads that will give you the headache and upset stomach and the never again oath the next day. If its clean neutral you are after, make very sever cuts here. Be aware, you are not loseing any good drinking hooch, as you will redistilll those heads and tails. Easier and better if you are doing stripping runs then a spirit run? Only take the cleanest and most perfect for your final drinking run. Save all the rest for a later run. Then if you want perfection cut to 50% or less and soak on activated carbon. Many times better than store bought if done right.

Took me many trials till I learned all the tricks, so ask away if its not just right."

OOPS! my mistake. For a neutral you will only want to collect the 95% and put all the rest into the faints carboy, including the heads and save till you have enough to run a full spirit run. You are not loseing anything, just makeing the cleanest neutral that you can.

Make heavy cuts for neutral, and save the cuts for a later good distillation.

Doing this, many doen't even bother carbon filtering, but I usually do."

Cut it to a reasonable level first. You will find also that it gets smoother is left to completly mix with the water for a week or so. It will turn hot as you dilute. That is just the start of that process."

Sred,
Welcome to the Forum!

Yep...it's not the percent of alcohol that give you headaches, chase cars and bark a the moon...it's the junk in the foreshots, heads and tails that will do. :)
