Hi guys- Have just started this hobby, read almost all the forum questions and replies, all my questions were answered well almost all. ran three batches 25L sugar wash using turbo 48 PS11 high capacity full reflux got on average about 85%, cut to 45%. treated the carbon per instructions and then put the carbon directly into the product two heaping tablspoons per quart. Let stand swirling dailey for two weeks. Great product all friends were impressed.Now this part is probably overkill but redistilled full reflux using the baking soda, came off at 94% you can't believe how sweet this stuff is. definitley worth the effort and time.

Save your carbon for the last or second run, as the bakeing soda will just clog it up. Not only does this have that sweet clean taste, but with the proper cuts, it illiminates the hangovers and upset stomachs that you get from even good store bought stuff.
Try a teaspoon of glycerine added to a qt. to see how you like it."

column temp for the wash run 78-79 C , but the temp for the second run was much lower 72 C is there a reason for this difference.

"72 is where mine always runs, but I am at 5000'. Barometric pressure will also influence the vapor temp.
The actual placement of the thermometer will chang the readings, especially if it touches any of the packing around the cooling tubes. Just a little change in the heighth will make a difference.
Compensate for your altitude if any, and then focus on controlling the temp. with your reflux water flow and how cold it is.
85% for your first run is too low if you made cuts for feints. Which would suggest you were running a bit too fast. Too much heat input or not enough reflux water. That would also explain the higher temp reading."
