"We install a brand of stainless steel water heaters called indirects. They have a coil in the bottom through which heated boiler water flows to heat the water surrounding it in the tank. Typically we supply the coil with 180 to 200 deg. boiler water while heating the tank to its set temperature of 130 or so.
If I modified this tank and put my liquid to be distilled into the tank and ran my 180 deg boiler water through the coil until I heated the liquid to 180 would I have enough heat for distillation or do I need to be signifigantly above the 174 deg. ethanol temp to get it to vaporize and distill?
With the controls and parts available to me for this I could have damn good temperature control for the process."

"Greetings all.
My thoughts would be that the heat up time would be a bit long if the max heat input could only acheive a buck eighty.
Furthermore, if the element cycles on and off during the body of the run you will not get the best possible results as cuts can get smeared. Constant input rather than cycling is most prefered i would think.
I'm sure a simple mod if nesssesary would render your ""indirect"" a fine still boiler."

"These things get connected to an oil fired heating boiler. They can heat 40 gallons of water from 55 degrees to 140 degrees in about 20 minutes, heat up time is not an issue.
Cycling is constant & well controlled.
My question is are the ethanol vapors coming off at 174 or do I have to get the wash up well over the ethanol temp to push it out?"

I guess another way of asking my question is that with your ordinary still when you've got ethanol coming out the top of the column at 173 to 174 deg whats the temperature of the wash or liquid down in the boiler?

"Oh, didn't realize you were not running electric.
Wash temp will change as etho gets depleated.
Also, what would be the abv of a typical wash?
10 to 12% will react differently than 18 to 20%
Can't really comment on temperatures and such. I have never used a thermo as I really don't need one.
Sorry for not being more helpful."
