Hello forum folk! I have a small question about stripping runs im not quit sure i understand the concept so i figured i would post some questions and let the master distillers help me. What is the point of a stripping run? Whats the difference in a stripping run and your regular run? At what temperature would you run your pot still while running a stripping run?

"Stripping run is the best way to shed bulk amounts of water within your wash. Then do the spirit run more slowly to render your final poduct (with good cuts).

Potstillers like blanikdog like to do single runs however. This method is very popular for insuring good flavor carry over. Run slow for good separation, but only once for good flavor carry over. Brandies are perhaps best this way.

Lots of skill needed on making cuts this way. I hope to one day taste a good single run brandy. I usually stuff single run cuts so I prefer the sharper,crisper 2nd run cut.

Potstillers need not be concerned with temps through the run. Temps will continue to change through the course of the run as the alcohol gets depleted from within the wash.

You will be CONSTANTLY fiddling with your heat input if you try to control temps. Concern yourself with ""input"" only. Leave the temps for the reluxing units.

*Charge your boiler 2/3 full.
*Apply full on heat input.
*when your column is to hot to touch mid way up it's lenth, throttle back on input just a (perhaps) tad.
*When discharging/production begins, allow for a thick pencil lead sized stream. Some input adjustments may be needed.
*Your condenser will determine how hard you can run(with out puking). If your condenser is knocking down all the vapor, then perhaps you can throttle your heat back up. If you are getting vapor out the discharge then throttle down your input. In a couple of runs this will become second nature.

If your liebig is spitting and huffing, turn the heat down a bit. You can reduce huffing by adding a turbulator or some loosely installed scrubber material in front of the liebig entry.

But be mindful that liebigs do huff.

Stripping is part of the 2 step process of distilling. Using a pot still you run it wide open, and collect everything that comes out. Throw the heat to it. You have now 'stripped' the wash of it's alcohol, of course you have some trash too, but that is removed later. You save this strip until you have run enough washes to make a good load for your final run. (how much is enough? Depends upon your still sizing, etc.) Your spirit run will now make a 90%+ abv with reflux, or a fine refined pot run. Think of the stripping run as nothing more than an alcohol concentrator, you can get a larger, more refined spirit run then if you just made single run batches. The stripping run gets rid of a large amount of the trash for you."

LWTCS, (or anyone) So when you re-run after stripping...what do you dilute the "stripped collection" with? I gather LWTCS likes his Rum, so I wondered if he went back to the leftovers (from the strip run) for flavor or added water to keep any nasties out!?

Orange when it coms to rum first run hard to pass up sometimes. As for dilute some do just add water but you less some of that rummy goodness. I've add a gall of fresh wash back to the stripped collection it helps with favor. I know i heard a few old times tell me about it

If you are doing a stripping run, can you do it with a reflux chamber? Planning on making whiskey and I have never done a stripping run, just made cuts.

I can change from reflux to potstill but never have yet..... would i need to do potstill to do stripping and then take the product from stripping and then put through reflux?

I just use the top section of my column for stripping runs ... with one or two mesh plugs in it. There's no need for the entire column as all you're trying to do during a stripping run is reduce volume.

If you're making whiskey, you might want to skip a reflux run and just use the top section of your column (pot mode). Refluxing will give you a more neutral flavor ... which is probably not what you want for whiskey.

You can do several stripping runs then combine the low wines for a spirit run (distilling only low wines). Or you can take your low wines from a stripping run and toss it in the boiler when you run a new wash. You might want to experiment with both to see what you like best. If low wines + wash doesn't turn out to your satisfaction you can always dilute and run it again.

So please help me understand....I have my heat source on a controller. I set the controller for 203 and just collect all the liquids then when the temperature goes higher I end my stripper run? put the liquids in for a 2nd run but run it slow so I can do the correct cuts.. sounds right?

That's correct. I'll use the low wines from two stripping runs for my spirit run. The idea is just to reduce volume (or conversely, increase the abv). Since you're just trying to reduce the volume, you can drive it hard and fast -- no need to worry about smearing since you're going to keep everything anyway (other than your fores). How much you collect will depend on what you're trying to make. I typically quit once I reach 20% or so.

When you do your spirit run you can slow things way down and collect in multiple jars, then make your cuts after letting things air for a day or two.

I got Corn mash bubbling right now. My plans is to take the packig out and run the whiskey to save the flavor. ill be ready to run it in 2 weeks so ill see how it comes out. I found that if I run it with my packing that it's not much different than my suger runs, guessing the packing is cleaning it too good.
