"There have been so many new distillers just starting recently that I thought I would make a few remarks.

First it is a great and enjoyable hobby, with lots of room for continious improvements, and many hundreds of different flavors and styles.

Then, of coarse, it is way cheaper than for a good bought product. And in time, yours can exceed even some of the best.

But now, heres a biggy: As many have posted here, why strive to make very carefull and clean cuts. Eliminating and saveing for later runs all the heads and tails, just collecting the best of the hearts for each run. Those feints contain the headaches, upset stomachs and the fell like shit for a day or more.

Commercial distillers cannot afford to do this. They have time proven ways to filter, age and such that will eventually hide and smooth their product into something very enjoyable to drink. But it will still have some of the noxious elements in it. You will be surprised how much better you feel when or if you might over indulge. You can easily test this and see for yourself, but if you have an acquintance that you don't particularly like but who loves to drink a bit too much.... Just don't let someone like that know you made it yourself for the one test batch.

Much, much easier on your whole system liver and kidneys.

One last thought. Drinking does deplete b vitamins quickly, so good idea to take a b complex, especially b 12 before a drink and one the next morning. Good for you anyhow.

Cheers!"

"I have to agree with you there Mountain Walker.
I spent a few years trying to find a decent moonshine after I was given some great stuff. About an inch in the bottom of a jar. It went down real smooth without much taste and exploded in a nice warmth in your stomach.
I finally gave up and built my own still. I am on the second one now, a Bokakob design and I am still trying to duplicate that first batch of shine I got years ago. I'm getting real close too.
I just finished a run of UJSM and have 3 gallons of 160 proof in a soda keg with an aquarium pump on it. I also have a gallon of the nicest vodka I have ever had, with a little black charcoal sediment on the bottom. Boy that stuff is hard to filter out and it takes a week to settle. Still on the steep side of the learning curve on this hobby, I'll wash it better next time.
I tell you what, I feel rich! I have never been much of a drinker cause I hate to get hangovers. I am starting to appreciate it more cause I dont seem to be getting them any more. Not even a slight headach in the morning.
I love this hobby. Peppermint schnapps and Panty Droppers coming up!"

"Hi Nemo,

I had the same experiance. I had just finished college, had been accepted to medical school. That summer, a girlfriend gave me a mason jar of some homebrew her uncle had made. He only used fruits he grew himself, pears, peaches, apples, and berries. He used a small homemade pot still and ran it 4 times. It was the smoothest, cleanest drink I had ever had. Straight from the bottle, it was like drinking water almost with a nice hint of fruit. Didn't seem strong at all till I tried to stand up.
I decided right then that someday I would be makeing my own.

She knew what a pants dropper was. BigGrin"

i must say I have thoroughly enjoyed makin my own, so far I have run at least 4-5 gal vodka or more, on 5th run ujsm and have purchased all kinds of grain for future adventures. My little 30l reflux has been runnin every fri-sun for the last few months. I have revamped the reflux colume and tweeked it to where the first run after about 200ml taste just as good as a 2nd or 3rd run. I did learn early to discard the first 50-150ml and start makin cuts usually after 1st qt.or so. It has been so clean and vodca has run 90% and ujsm around 70-80 takin it to 50. I must have about 11/2 gal heads and tails to use later. I'm savin all until i have about 3-4 gal vodka and ujsm and will run together. That I hope will be a killa!!! Thanks for all the help!!!!

"tell you my story....i was a heavy drinker..had my own business i could take a day sometimes days off...simply i had the money...
but in 1994...one day i said to my self...enough ...i quit drinking even beer..
in 1995 my brother in law was visiting us...and he asked ..did you ever try a moonshine..i said yes...did you ever try to brew one... my answer was no...
he said ..do you mind if i show you how....without any plans in my mind i said..sure lets try...
now we have....2010...and i am still making a moonshine..just for my friends..we don't call this moonshine anymore ..they give a nice name for this stuff and they love it.. i try so many different varieties..and still experimenting with new once...
and what is the funny part of this...that i am sober since 1994...and never try or tasted my own product...
this my HOBBY..not for profit ..just for pleasure"
