"Just made my 3rd run with a 15lb/25L/Turbo 48 sugar wash.
I collected (15) 1/2 pint jars that averaged 88% abv. I have them setting with paper on top...hope I can wait until tomorrow for the tasting and cutting. I only wish one of the old timers were close by to teach me this hands on. I cut way to hard and end up with more heads and tails than I do the hearts. I love this new hobby...and so do my friends. Thanks mountwalker2 and others for your advice.

I am thinking about buying some cheap wine (box stuff) and mixing it with the
1 1/2 gallons of heads and tails that I kept from these three runs and running it in the pot mode. (I have to take the copper packing out to clean after 3 runs anyway right) What do ya'll think about this? Should I get white or red wine etc? Any input would be greatly appreciated."

"Well now, the whole point in collecting in those small amounts is to allow them to breath and mellow a bit and then make your cuts the next day. And record the amounts of heads, hearts and tails to help with the next run of a same recipe wash.

You can certainly take a jar from the middle, cut it and sample tonight.

when diluting you will notice an exothermal reaction. This actually goes on slowly for weeks till the water and alchohol marry completely. aste and flavor greatly improve after all that. I like to set mine aside to rest with some washed carbon to really polish it off.

I never wash my copper, just backflush the column with hot water and stand to dry. Oxidized copper works better.

Enjoy your rewards!

"MW2,
Could you explain the process of setting with washed carbon? My kit came with a bag of carbon and 3 pieces of pvc and a coupling. I would like to try the carbon thing but read that its a pain with the tubes so I haven't bothered with it since I am still just practicing with sugar washes.

How do I prepare the carbon before putting it in my hooch?
Do I put that in neutral and if so...do I cut to desired proof first?
Can the carbon be reused?"

There is a link to a book on carbon from Gert Strand on Brewhaus.com.

My pet goldfish was sick, so I decided to take him to the vet -- but unfortunately, he died on the way there. Maybe I didn't put enough air holes in the box.

lol lol
the method mentioned above is actually easier. maybe not as effective a strand describes but it has to do a bit of polishing. ill see if i can find my notes on that.

I think this is the description but i may have either reworded or changed something. I am always experiment/making easy thinks more dificult

A METHOD OF CARBON FILTERING

after all batches are run and saved, the 6 gallon carboy should be ready for carbon filtering

Actually i would prefer carbon filtering each batch to keep the size of the operation smaller

dilute the spirit to 50 % with water

(liters collected X alcohol strength) divided by desired strength = amt. water required

use 12X40 or close activated carbon at a rate of 25 grams per liter: ((liters X .2642 = gallons)) 3.785 875 liters in a gallon-soo 17 grams X 3.875= 65.875 grams per gallon or 2.32ounces/gal

pour spirits into a vessel and add the carbon---STIR VIGOROUSLY

stir every morning and night for 7 days-- i guess 3 times would be better.
then allow it to settle --( 24 hours i guess)) Longer is always better

siphon off the clear spirit and carefully filter the rest that has the carbon in it.

discard the carbon((( Actually filter both the clear liquid and the rest of carbon left in the pot

THE BOLD ITEMS ARE WHAT I BELIEVE ARE MY ADD INS"
