Is it required to clean the rings used in the column after a couple of runs? If so what is used and how often should it be done? If not done will an off flavor or smell be produced in the final product? Thanks and MtnWalker if you are out there I have the same setup as you and wonder what you use in your column? Thanks!

"Copper in the top half and SS scrubbers in the bottom.

You should never really have to clean rashig rings. Backflush with a gal. of very hot water, enless you have a scorch or something The next run the intial fores and heads will clean any normal offs. I tried the rings for a while and didn't like them as well as the meshes."

Does your rig have the cross tubes for cooling the vapor? I really would use more copper and SS scrubbers myself but stuffing the column that has tubes crossing at the top and a bar of sone sort onto which we screw a sort of screen to makes using anything but raschig rigs a problem.
As a partial fix for this, i purchases a 1 foot extension which i attach to the bottom of my 2 inch tower and i put the copper mesh in that.
The purpose is only to get some copper into the rig.
