"I'm a new user here and am in the process of building a unit based on a design I found online for a valved reflux machine. It's built either on a milk can or a beer keg for a boiler section. As costs are an issue, I have what I believe is a stainless steel milk can with a few rust spots on the inside on the bottom. They're cleaning up nicely with a brass cup brush on a power drill. I've had the can, many of the more expensive copper fittings, pipe and valves already and should be ready for a test run with water shortly but I need to know if I should be concerned with rust. As long as you've cleaned the rust off, the rust stains won't be a problem. When finished I'd run a couple of trash runs through it (cheap wine). That will clean up any residue.

I'm working on the same valved reflux column but am going with the 1/2 keg boiler. Won't be finished for a couple of weeks. Very expensive.

Yah, what I'm referring to. If the rust is gone & the stain is all that's left, I don't see a problem. Iron oxide doesn't poison people, how many house have black iron water pipes that are somewhat rusty?

I've used brass cup brushes and various sandpapers and I'm thinking as long as I don't have actual red rust I should be OK. I've got iron pots and cast iron pans and I don't think I'll have a problem as long as I don't let it sit damp.
