Have any of you guys seen these vodka kits. They produce around 21% alcohol you can drink without distilling. I was wondering If I could just use turbo yeast and sugar to do the same thing in just a few days, and then just filter it with activated carbon. I dont have a still and was wanting to make the highest amount of drinkable alcohol without distilling.

We actually developed these kits about 10 years ago (under the brand name European Connection). Due to declining interest we stopped producing them, but they did work very well. The key is to use a true high-alcohol yeast (such as the 8kg Turbo) and control the fermentation to push the limits. You then stabilize the product, carbon filter, clear, and it is ready for use.

I may be wrong, but its my understanding carbon filtering won't do much if anything for the heads. Head ache, and yuk feeling will still be there. Should clean up the yukky tails though. And I would think it would take a lot of carbon?

You are correct- it is certainly no replacement for distillation. However, on a fermentation only level it does work very well.

So as long as I stabilize it and filter it right then it should be okay to drink right. By the way what yeast and stabilizer should I use to do this. I was just thinking of using like a still spirits turbo yeast.

Sorry if I'm being gruff, but I would suggest 2 aspirin before you start, and one complete B complex before, one during, an one folowing your injoyement.

I don't like an easy still, but would be so much better for you. Like a water distiller running in your kitchen or LR. Still would be some headaches and yuk feeling, but not as much. IMO!"

Stabilizers will generally be the same as in wine making- potassium sorbate and potassium metabisulfite. I cannot comment on the Still Spirits yeast, as I am not familiar with the specific strain and nutrient composition, so I do not know if you can push it beyond 18-20%.

How much methanol would be in 5 gallons of fermented wash. Im only gonna use pure cane sugar (possibly dextrose depending on pricing).

Well after drinkin my clean, strictly stilled hearts only likker,,it would be enough to make me wish someone would put a bullit in my ear.

All washes and recipes are ever so different. Apples can be very heady.

If I were stilling 5 gallons I'd chuck 100ml of fores for good measure and collect 300 to 600 ml as heads depending on my still configuration and my equalizing time.

Ain't good enough at math to figger how much stone cold heads per se' but that don't matter to me. That first 600 can go in the feins jug just as easily.
I ain't in no rush and I got plenty drinkin stock.

Your gonna blow your guts drinkin that, And
21%,,,,,its gonna be hilarious.

I find a vast difference in how I feel and react the next day from my own very controlled distillate and some of the most expensive store bought examplers. There are some,but they take many years and painstaking care, and cost immense. Plus, I can do certain grains that are not availiable commercially, but are better.

Main thing is quality. Health and well being can be a serious issue if enjoying your distillate. Its not just something to get a buzz."
