"What is the best way to clean a beer keg? I am going to order the column and attach it to the beer keg. I need to clean the keg since it has sit for some time. I know you can't use bleach on stainless steel so i was wondering what i can use to soak it and get the stains from old beer sediments out.

"Great thing bout stainless is that it cleans up real easy and does not reatin odor.

Good water flush is usually just fine.

Or drop in a bit of chain and adgitate with some warm/hot water.

Stay away from soaps and such IMO."

"Tried that but there are still stains where the old beer ran back down the sides. A rinse didn't do it. I have it full of water right now and am going to let it set.

Thanks

"The stains if clean aren't really going to hurt you. However, A bit of bleach if not too strong or soaked too long will not impact the ss to a worried about issue.

Otherwise, just make a rlun with the still with distilled ACV in it and some water which is wat you should do anyhow to test for leaks and clean the column.

Every keg I have ever used, when I pulled he plug it washed ot with just clean water.
if the pllug was already pullled i would sanatize.

coose your methods."

"Yeah i will do that. It is just a little dark run stains. I pulled the plug myself and the guy i got it from had it sitting for a long period of time and it was half full of flat beer. He dumped it with his tap and i took the plug out so it is really just where it sat with beer in it for a couple years. But when my column gets here i will run one batch of water with a little vinegar and then a couple water runs. Maybe that will do it.

Thanks

"Just sayin.... I use a beer keg and it sat for god only knows how long in my barn and before that.... well you get the picture. When I opened it up and started my modifications it gagged me - you know... the smell of rotten beer. but I just hosed it out and wiped it with a rag with bleach water ( not very strong actually) and it seems there is no cayyover at all. Now thats been 2 years ago and I'm haven't woke up dead yet. And none of the frequent flyers that stop by with thier hand out have keiled over yet. After all it is stainless so nothing SHOULD permeate the metal.
Oh and I can still see some stains inside mine too but still no ill effects as of yet."

Jstump... if you get time, click on the above --Brewhaus forums-- then click on --questions on building a distiller-- theeeen click on beer keg - going electric. (whew)Thats my rig. I'm not braggin but this is a thread about beer keg stills. I used gas for a while and then converted the unit to electric and thats way easier to control the steady heat that you need for control of flow. Alot of folks have control with the tower water lines but I'm just a pot stiller so no cooling lines through the tower on mine. Anyway mine might give you some ideas for your build so givera look. Hope this helps.
